Cracking the Truth About Eggs

Eggs are a great source of protein, they contain lutein and zeaxanthin which are antioxidants that protect your eyes from damage caused by blue light and aging. They are also high in choline, a nutrient essential for brain development, nerve function, and memory. Eggs are also packed with essential vitamins and minerals and provide a little bit of everything. But does the type of egg really matter? With prices varying wildly and so many different labels and options to choose from, we wanted to crack open the truth about eggs.

Know Your Labels- Not all eggs are created equal—and neither are the labels. Here’s a quick breakdown of the most common terms:

  • Cage-Free: Hens aren’t in cages, but often still live indoors with limited space.
  • Free-Range: Hens have some outdoor access, but the amount and quality vary.
  • Pasture-Raised: These hens typically have the most space and outdoor access. This is the gold standard for animal welfare and egg quality.
  • Organic: Hens are fed organic, non-GMO feed and live cage-free with some outdoor access. No antibiotics or synthetic pesticides are used.
  • Omega-3 Enriched: Hens are fed a diet high in omega-3s, usually flaxseed or algae, which may translate to slightly higher omega-3s in the egg.

Best Bet? Pasture-raised and organic eggs offer the highest welfare for the hens and the best nutrition for you.

What About Yolk Color?- Yolk color is primarily a reflection of the hen’s diet

  • Deep orange yolks usually come from hens that eat a varied diet rich in carotenoids (think grasses, marigolds, alfalfa).
  • Pale yolks often indicate a grain-heavy diet, common in commercial settings.

Does It Matter Nutritionally?- In many cases, yes—deeper yolks can have more vitamins like A, D, and E, as well as omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin (great for eye health).

When your checking out, the shock value of the egg sticker price may make you want to opt for the cheapest option, but do yourself a favor and splurge on a more nutritious alternative.
