Let’s Taco-Bout It

National Taco Day was on October 4th . If you missed it, you could use these tips to have a taco night with new ingredients! When we think of tacos we may think of a classic, hard shell beef taco with salsa, cheese, shredded lettuce, and sour cream. But you may not think of all the different ways you can make tacos. Cuisine for Healing uses jackfruit for tacos. A great alternative for vegetarians, vegans, or even meat-loving customers. Jackfruit takes the flavor of other flavors it is combined with. We combine jackfruit with BBQ sauce, representing a classic BBQ pulled pork tacos. Jackfruit is just one alternative, there are alternatives for every ingredient in tacos. Below are a few ways to change up your taco nights!

Taco Variations to try:

  • Tortilla Alternatives: corn tortilla, cauliflower tortilla, lettuce wrap, stuffed bell pepper, stuffed zucchini, stuffed sweet potato
  • Meat Alternatives: legumes, vegan meats, jackfruit, eggplant, or your favorite vegetable
  • Sour Cream Alternatives:
    • Greek Yogurt
    • Coconut milk: The cream on top of full-fat coconut milk can be skimmed off and blended with apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, and sea salt to be used as a plant-based sour cream substitute to top your favorite dishes
    • Cashews: blend-soaked cashews with vinegar, lemon juice, and sea salt.
  • Make your own salsa:
    • Simple: add tomatoes, onion, garlic, peppers, and cilantro into a blender or food processor
    • Salsa Verde: tomatillos (cook the tomatillos, boil, broil in the oven, or pan roast), onion, jalapeño, lime, and cilantro
    • Mango Salsa: fresh mango, red onion, jalapeño, fresh cilantro, fresh lime
  • Home-made taco seasoning: chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper
  • Stronger Flavor:
    • Cook protein in onion and cilantro first
    • Add pickled ingredients
    • Add sweet ingredients like pineapple
