Staying Hydrated By: Sophie Hoang

By February 22, 2023Uncategorized

Drinking water is something so simple, yet often overlooked. It’s one of the most important aspects to good health and daily function. It’s recommended to drink about half your body weight in ounces of water a day, so it will vary for everyone. Here are a few of the many advantages of maintaining proper hydration:

  • Digestion– Water is necessary for our bodies to properly digest meals. Bloating, gas, indigestion, and irregular bowel movements are all major health issues that can be brought on by a water deficiency. Water helps break down soluble fiber and food from our diets, so our bodies can absorb the nutrients.
  • Brain function enhancement– Drinking water promotes communication between brain cells and flushes out toxins that interfere with cognition. Water transports nutrients to the brain, and studies have shown that staying hydrated aids in making decisions more quickly and performing better on cognitive exams. Water can also enhance blood flow and oxygen to the brain, which helps with mood and emotion regulation, memory improvement, stress reduction, and headache relief. Without hydration, brain cells can shrink in size and mass which may cause brain fog.
  • More energy- Dehydration has been shown to impede blood flow, which can influence the supply of oxygen to the brain. As a result, our hearts may need to work harder to pump oxygen throughout our bodies. This causes us to feel more tired and unfocused throughout the day.
  • Detoxification– By consuming water, the kidneys are ultimately able to transport toxins and wastes from our bodies. Our kidneys assist the body in removing waste and water. Our body will contain toxic metabolic waste if we don’t drink enough water, and our health will deteriorate if our kidneys don’t get enough water to filter it.
  • Disease Prevention– Numerous studies have demonstrated the critical function that water plays in disease prevention. According to a study conducted by researchers from the University of Sheffield in Sheffield, England’s Centre for Human Nutrition, women who drink enough water reduce their risk of breast cancer by 79%.

Everybody needs to make sure they drink enough water each day. Many people are unaware of the detrimental effects that even minor dehydration can have on your physical and mental health. It is among the simplest and most effective techniques to improve our general health.
