The Updated Food Allergy List: What You Need to Know in 2024

Food allergies are a significant concern for millions of people worldwide. The effects range from mild discomfort to life-threatening anaphylaxis. Staying informed about the latest updates in food allergy lists is crucial for managing these conditions effectively. In 2024, there have been some key updates to the list of common food allergens. Here’s what you need to know.

The Big Nine Allergens- Previously known as the “Big Eight,” the list of major food allergens has expanded to the “Big Nine.” This group accounts for the majority of serious allergic reactions to food. The allergens include:

  1. MilkMilk allergy is common, especially in children. It can cause symptoms such as hives, vomiting, and, in severe cases, anaphylaxis. Milk allergy differs from lactose intolerance, which is a digestive issue rather than an immune response.
  2. Eggs- Egg allergies are prevalent in children and often outgrown with age. Symptoms include skin reactions, respiratory problems, and gastrointestinal discomfort.
  3. Fish- Fish allergies, typically lifelong, can trigger severe reactions. Common allergenic fish include salmon, tuna, and cod.
  4. Crustacean Shellfish- Crustacean shellfish such as shrimp, crab, and lobster are common allergens, especially in adults. These allergies can cause severe reactions and are rarely outgrown.
  5. Tree Nuts- Tree nuts, including almonds, walnuts, and cashews, are potent allergens. Even trace amounts can cause severe reactions. Tree nut allergies are often lifelong and can coexist with peanut allergies.
  6. Peanuts- Peanut allergies are among the most severe and lifelong food allergies. They can cause anaphylaxis, requiring immediate medical attention. Peanut allergies are particularly prevalent in Western countries.
  7. Wheat- Wheat allergies, distinct from celiac disease and gluten sensitivity, involve an immune response to wheat proteins. Symptoms can range from hives to anaphylaxis.
  8. Soybeans- Soy allergies are common in infants and often outgrown. Symptoms can include hives, gastrointestinal issues, and, in rare cases, anaphylaxis. Soy is a common ingredient in processed foods, requiring careful label reading.
  9. Sesame- The newest addition to the major allergen list, sesame, can cause severe allergic reactions. With increasing use in foods, such as tahini and various baked goods, awareness of sesame allergies is crucial for safe food choices.
